Service Learning

My service learning experience was quite enjoyable. I went to a movie called The Inconvenient Truth with Al Gore who is a huge advocate about climate change and how the world should act on it. The movie itself was every interesting because it showed the good and the bad side to the issues on climate change. The movie depicted very good visuals to display the change that climate change is making on the world and it also showed the perspective of multiple professionals and what they believe. About a week later I complete my other portion of my service learning by helping my professor and a couple others set up their booths for a convention to display some geological devices and models to help the people there to further their understanding on the topic. For this service learning I helped with the setup, moving in supplies, making crafts for the participants and learning some cool things along the way. Lastly an in class service learning experience myself and my partner had the opportunity ti make a game for some after school kids to play. We came up with a game and we named it Dig for Archie!. So what we did was we 3-D print 2 sculptures of a very old reptile that was found by one of Appalachian States paleontologist and then we cut the 3-D print into 4 pieces and then we hid the pieces amongst the dirt, sand and rocks. We then asked the kids questions about the reptile nicknamed Archie and if the kids got it correct then they could dig around and try to find all of Archie for 30 seconds. The first one to find all 4 pieces of Archie wins!

From all of these experiences I have been apart of since the beginning of this semester I have learned a lot about what a community can do to educate. In the future I would like to do more with the kids. Its not everyday you have a chance to educate a young adult and have a good time in the process.

Scientists and other people involved in the community can have such a big impact on the people around them. Through this process of service learning experience it has showed me how easily people can help one another to grow and learn. It can be a very warm and inviting place because all they want to do is help people learn and understand something. And in everyone wanting to learn it can become a community because you can learn more about the people around you and meet your neighbors and make new friends.

Here are some images of me and some of the Service Learning experience. I am the handsome one in the blue rain jacket and tye-dye shirt.

  1. Okay James, this is good but you need to move the part about the Archie project to blog post #4 (Helping People Understand Science), as that counts as the self evaluation for the special project. In this blog post, you can also add the part about helping with the Earth Science display at the public library, and that we watched Climate Refugees as a class and you stayed for the post-discussion, plus what you learned from it.

  2. Gales, you are so great with kids, it's admirable. I think your project was great to help the kids really understand the process it took to find Archie. I still do not see the handsome man in the blue rain jacket and tye-dye shirt though. Good post.

  3. It looks like you had a lot of fun doing service for this class. Your project was really cool especially the fact that you used the 3D printer to print your tools. Good Job
